  18. Description of Working Group:
  19. The Host Resources MIB Working Group is chartered to produce exactly
  20. one document that defines SNMP MIB objects that instrument
  21. characteristics common to all internet hosts. The goal of this work is
  22. to address the urgent operational need in the internet community for
  23. management of host systems. Owing to this urgency, the Working Group
  24. will focus exclusively on the alignment of existing MIB technology in
  25. order to achieve common solutions in a timely manner.
  26.  
  27. For purposes of this effort, the term ``internet host'' is construed to
  28. mean any computer that communicates with other similar computers
  29. attached to the internet and that is directly used by one or more human
  30. beings. Although the work of the Group does not necessarily apply to
  31. devices whose primary function is communications services (e.g.,
  32. terminal servers, routers, bridges, monitoring equipment), such
  33. relevance is not explicitly precluded.  The single MIB produced shall
  34. instrument attributes common to all internet hosts including, for
  35. example, both personal computers and systems that run variants of
  36. Unix.

  38. The methodology of this Working Group is to focus entirely on the
  39. alignment of existing, enterprise-specific MIBs for SNMP that are
  40. relevant to its task. The Group will work towards its goal by
  41. distillation and generalization of these existing MIBs into a single,
  42. common MIB definition.

  44. Owing to the urgent operational need for managing host systems, this
  45. effort will not be comprehensive in scope. Rather, the MIB produced by
  46. this Group will be confined to critical information about hardware and
  47. software configuration, processor and memory use, and data storage
  48. capacities, backup, and use.

  50. Owing to the lack of a well-understood and accepted architecture, the
  51. Working Group will not address in any way, mechanisms that could be used
  52. to monitor or control the use of licensed software products.
  53.  
  54. All definitions produced by the Group will be consistent with the SNMP
  55. network management framework and all other internet-standard MIBs for
  56. SNMP.  Wherever possible, the definitions produced will make use of or
  57. align with relevant work in progress with chartered working groups of
  58. the IETF. Also, wherever possible, the Working Group will take into
  59. consideration pre-existing, stable work produced by other, accredited
  60. standards bodies.
